Biography
Matt Regier (Republican Party) is a member of the Montana State Senate, representing District 5. He assumed office on January 6, 2025. His current term ends on January 3, 2029. Regier was elected Montana State Senate President in November 2024. Regier was born in Kalispell, Montana, in 1980. He earned a bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Montana. Before his election to public office, Regier founded the Stillwater Sod Corporation and invested in real estate. Regier was first elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 2016, defeating Deborah Gentry (D) 77% to 23%. He was re-elected in 2018, 2020, and 2022. A majority of House Republicans elected Regier as speaker of the state House in November 2022. Regier led the Republican caucus during the 2023 legislative session, when Republicans held a supermajority in both chambers of the Legislature. The House passed bills related to tax cuts, abortion restrictions, and a ban on certain medical treatments for transgender minors. Regier won election to the Montana State Senate in 2024. He defeated Link Neimark (D) 76% to 24%. Before assuming office, Regier was elected Senate President by his Republican colleagues in November 2024, defeating then-incumbent Senate President Jason Ellsworth (R) and state Sen. Greg Hertz (R) in a Republican caucus vote. The Daily Montanan's Blair Miller wrote, "Regier’s pitch to his fellow senators involved crafting tax policy friendly to Montanans, prioritizing children when making education policy, trimming the state’s budget and making government more efficient. He also said he wanted to provide further tax relief for Montanans."
