Biography
Scott Surovell (Democratic Party) is a member of the Virginia State Senate, representing District 34. He assumed office on January 10, 2024. His current term ends on January 12, 2028. Surovell became majority leader of the Virginia State Senate in November 2023. The majority leader acts as the spokesperson for the party's policy positions, schedules the daily calendar, and helps direct the party's overall legislative agenda. Surovell was born in Washington, D.C., on August 21, 1971. He received a B.A. with a major in political science and a minor in American studies from James Madison University in 1993 and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1996. Surovell co-founded Surovell Isaacs & Levy PLC, a law firm in Fairfax, Virginia. Surovell served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing District 44 from 2010 to 2016. He was elected to represent District 36 of the Virginia State Senate in 2015. He ran unopposed in 2019. In 2023, Surovell defeated Mark Springman (R) to represent District 34 after state legislative redistricting. According to Daniel Nichanian of Bolts, Surovell "was a force behind the criminal legal reforms Democrats passed while they controlled the state government in 2019 and 2020." In 2021, Surovell sponsored legislation to abolish the death penalty in Virginia. Governor Ralph Northam (D) later signed the bill into law, making Virginia "the first state in the former Confederacy to abolish the death penalty."
