Biography
Tony Evers (Democratic Party) is the Governor of Wisconsin. He assumed office on January 7, 2019. His current term ends on January 4, 2027. Evers was born in 1951 in Plymouth, Wisconsin. He received a bachelor's, a master's, and a doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He worked in education as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and regional administrator. Evers served as Wisconsin's Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2001 to 2009. He was elected in a nonpartisan election to serve as Wisconsin's Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2008. As superintendent, Evers was responsible for providing leadership for Wisconsin's public school districts. Additionally, he was responsible for providing the public with information about school management, attendance, and performance. In 2018, Evers was elected Governor of Wisconsin when he defeated incumbent Gov. Scott Walker (R) 49.5% to 48.4%. Evers said his experience as superintendent inspired him to run for governor: "I realized that if I really wanted to make a difference for these kids in the state, I couldn't rely on this position to do it. The governor is the one who sets the tone."
