Steve Scalise

Biography

Steve Scalise (Republican Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Louisiana's 1st Congressional District. He assumed office on May 3, 2008. His current term ends on January 3, 2027. He previously served as the House minority whip in the 116th Congress and the House majority whip from 2014 to 2019. House in the 118th Congress. Scalise won the Republican nomination to be speaker on October 11, 2023.On October 12, Scalise withdrew from the House speaker election. On August 29, 2023, Scalise announced he had been diagnosed with blood cancer. He referred to the cancer as "very treatable" and said that he had already begun the treatment. Scalise said he did not intend to resign, nor did he think his diagnosis would interfere with his work as House Majority Leader. Following treatment, his cancer is in remission as of February 2024.
