Biography
Ronald Mariano (Democratic Party) is a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 3rd Norfolk District. He assumed office in 1992. His current term ends on January 6, 2027. Mariano was first elected to the chamber in 1991. On December 30, 2020, Mariano was sworn in as speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Mariano was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1946. He received a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University and a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Mariano was a teacher at Quincy Public Schools for 12 years. He served on the Quincy School Committee from 1989 to 1995. As a representative, Mariano focused on health care, criminal justice, gun control, and education. As House Chair of the Joint Committee on Financial Services, Mariano helped draft a state healthcare reform law in 2006 that served as a model for the Affordable Care Act. Former President Barack Obama (D) said, "we built the Affordable Care Act on this template of proven, bipartisan success. [The Massachusetts law] was the model for the nation’s law." Mariano was also a proponent of a 2008 law allowing competition in the automobile insurance market, which was formerly managed by the state, and said he led efforts to pass Massachusetts’ 2014 gun safety legislation.
