In 2003, he graduated from the University of Delaware with a B.S. and an M.A. in economics. In 2004, he graduated from the University of Delaware with a B.A. in philosophy and biology. In 2006, he graduated from the University of Cambridge in England and Peking University in China with an M.A. in Chinese. Townsend went on to earn a law degree from Yale Law School.
