Martin Bender

Biography

Marty Bender, a lifelong Fort Wayne resident, served on the Fort Wayne City Council for three terms starting in 1996. He is returning as an At-Large Representative for the residents of Fort Wayne. Councilman Bender, a graduate of South Side High School, has been married to Peggy Bender for 41 years. He is a father to 5 children and 10 wonderful grandchildren. He faithfully served the City of Fort Wayne Police Department for 49 years, retiring in December 2023. Marty is a graduate of not only the Fort Wayne Police Academy but also the FBI National Academy, the U.S. Secret Service Academy, the Emergency Management Institute (FEMA) as well as several schools at Indiana University, Purdue University, and Northwestern University. He has served for 22 years as the Commander of the Fort Wayne SWAT Team, Bomb Squad, Hostage Negotiators, and the K-9 Unit, as well as the Bike Patrol, Public Safety Response Team, and Air Support Unit. Councilman Bender's focus on the City Council will be to closely monitor the expenditures of tax money and ensure the Fort Wayne Public Safety Divisions have what is needed to protect the citizens of Fort Wayne. Councilman Bender is serving as Council President for the 2026 year.
