Biography

Councilwoman Michelle Chambers is a proud native of Fort Wayne and a dedicated public servant committed to advancing the city's prosperity and inclusivity. Since assuming office on January 1, 2020, she has made history as one of the first two African American women elected to the Fort Wayne City Council and the first woman to hold an At-Large Council seat. In her tenure, she has championed policies that enhance affordable housing, strengthen neighborhoods, and direct funding toward public safety and economic development, ensuring that all residents benefit from the city's growth. Councilwoman Chambers has been instrumental in securing and passing key affordable housing legislation, creating opportunities for both developers and constituents to access quality housing. She has also successfully directed additional funding to neighborhoods, bolstering community programs, infrastructure improvements, and initiatives that enhance residents' quality of life. Her leadership has helped bring transformative economic development deals to Fort Wayne, ensuring sustainable growth that benefits the entire community. With over two decades of experience in public service, Councilwoman Chambers has worked extensively in local government, overseeing human services, workforce development programs, and multimillion-dollar community and economic redevelopment projects. Her career has been dedicated to advocating for underserved communities, at-risk youth, and families, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to social equity and economic empowerment. In addition to her role on the City Council, Councilwoman Chambers is a Work-Based Learner Internship Instructor for Fort Wayne Community Schools at Amp Lab, where she mentors and prepares students for career success. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Vincennes University, teaching Business and Political Science courses for East Allen County University, and has previously taught Entrepreneurial Business Startup classes for the City of Fort Wayne’s Build Program. Councilwoman Chambers is a distinguished leader with a strong academic background. She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Child Development. She has earned additional certifications in Executive Leadership from Kansas University and Real Estate Development from the University of Southern California. She is also a National Urban Fellow and a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, further underscoring her dedication to leadership and service. Through her relentless advocacy, strategic policymaking, and deep-rooted passion for community advancement, Councilwoman Michelle Chambers continues to be a transformative force in Fort Wayne, working tirelessly to build a more inclusive and prosperous future for all. Councilwoman Chambers is currently serving as the Co-Chair of the Public Works Committee.
